| This area offers 56 miles hardpacked and level ATV trails that wind through a scenic forest that consists of various maple, oak, aspen and birch trees. The name “Dead Horse” comes from an unfortunate event that happened back in 1900 when a team of horses fell through ice and perished. Foxes, raccoons, rabbits and white-tailed deer are among the wildlife that can be found throughout the forest. Camp Loretta is the suggested staging area for large trailers as it offers ample parking while the northeastern Dead Horse Slough trailhead offers a smaller staging area. There is no fee for camping but there is a daily use fee which is $5/day or you can purchase a annual pass for $20/year. This trail system had three miles of trails added in 2008 and there are plans to add 15 miles of additional trails over the next four years. The trails are closed from March 15 through April 30. |
